Do you need a sleep study?

According to recent estimates, millions of Americans suffer from one or more types of sleep disorder, ranging from difficulty with falling asleep and/or staying asleep to excessive daytime drowsiness.  Most people are not aware that these disorders can create or aggravate serious medical problems, affect one's productivity, and generally depress one's  outlook on and quality of life.

The Beverly Hospital Sleep Disorder Center, at the Beverly Hospital Hunt Center in Danvers, responds to the needs of patients with sleep disorders, their families and their physicians.

The Center has state-of-the-art medical equipment, along with a specially trained and qualified staff, available to assist in the proper diagnosis and treatment of assorted sleep disorders.

The Center uses a multidisciplinary approach, along with the referring physician, to treat and improve the quality of both sleeping and waking hours.

As part of the sleep disorder evaluation, the individual undergoes a sleep study (Polysomnography) in which a Polysomnographic technologist monitors the individual through the entire sleep period.  The patient sleeps in a home-like bedroom setting while the technologist monitors the patient from an adjacent room.

A referral to the Sleep Disorder Center includes a complete evaluation for many signs and symptoms that may include excessive sleepiness, loud snoring, hypertension, obesity and unusual behaviors during sleep.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has a booklet on their Web site that explains the latest science-based information about sleep, common sleep myths, coping with jet lag and much more.  To download your copy, click here to navigate to the NHLBI Web site.
